President meets with Rivlin on peace process, ISIS and Iran; President Trump first sitting US president to visit Western Wall
After a ceremony welcoming President Trump to Israel, Trump met with President Rivlin in Jerusalem, their meeting centered on the peace process. The leaders also discussed US-Israel relations, ISIS and Iran.
Trump emphasized the need to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, Trump stating after their meeting “the United States and Israel can declare with one voice that Iran must never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon – never, ever – and must cease its deadly funding, training and equipping of terrorists and militias, and it must cease immediately.”
On the peace process, President Rivlin stated “We reached a peace agreement with our neighbors in Jordan, and with our neighbors in Egypt. But we have not yet achieved our mission of living in peace with our neighbors, the Palestinians, and with the rest of the Arab world. Our destiny, Palestinians and Jews, is to live together in this land. We must build trust and cooperation between us.”
Trump will meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Bethlehem tomorrow morning.
On Monday afternoon, Trump traveled to Jerusalem’s Old City where he visited the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Trump made history Monday afternoon when he became the first sitting American president to visit the Western Wall (Kotel). His daughter Ivanka and wife Melania prayed at the women’s section of the wall.
Trump will continue touring Jerusalem before meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu this evening.
