Azerbaijan will purchase the Iron Dome missile defense system from Israel.

Azerbaijani Defense Industry Minister Yavar Jamalov confirmed the deal on Saturday, stating to the public “The Azerbaijani Defense Industry Ministry and the relevant Israeli body have reached the agreement on procurement of the Israeli Iron Dome air defense system.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu returned from his visit to Azerbaijan last week, where he met with state’s President, Ilham Aliyev. Their meeting was centered on increasing bilateral cooperation in technology, trade, agriculture, academia, science and energy. The meeting was significant as Azerbaijan has a Muslim majority.

President Aliyev praised Israeli-Azerbaijani relations, stating specifically on cooperation in defense “So far the contracts between Azerbaijani and Israeli companies with respect to purchasing of defense equipment is close to 5 billion dollars. More precisely- $4,850,000,000. The biggest part of these contracts have already been executed and still we are continuing to work on that and we are very satisfied with the level of this cooperation.”

Azerbaijan’s purchase of the Iron Dome comes just as Armenia recently purchased the Russian Iskander missile defense system, the system arriving in Yerevan in September.
