Prime Minister Netanyahu has appointed a new ambassador to the United Nations, MK Danny Danon Friday, replacing former UN envoy Ron Prosor.

Danon, the current Minister of Science and Technology, accepted the position on Friday stating that he will “do everything to advance Israel’s just positions” in the current “challenging period” facing the State of Israel.

Prime Minister Netanyahu congratulated Danon, stating on his decision to appoint him UN envoy “Minister Danon accepted the important challenge I posed to him. The United Nations is an important forum right now and I am sure that Danny will represent the truth with full force in the international arena.”

Danon, a member of the Likud party and MK in the Knesset (Parliament) since 2009, has extensive experience in foreign policy given his background and years spent working for the Jewish Agency. He was also Deputy Minister of Defense in 2013.

The Knesset Opposition, “The Zionist Union”, responded harshly to Danon’s appointment by releasing the statement “Houston we have a problem… The appointment of Space Minister Danon as ambassador to the UN is another nail in the coffin that Bibi [Netanyahu] is putting in Israel’s foreign relations. The Prime Minister is acting to find jobs for Likudniks instead of the strategic leader that Israel needs.”
