Israeli-Arab indicted for service in Islamic State

First case of an Israeli citizen being arrested from joining ISIS; Details of his arrest released to public Sunday following his indictment

An Arab-Israel was arrested last month and indicted today for service in ISIS. Israel’s Intelligence Agency (Shin Bet) in cooperation with Israeli police made the announcement on Sunday to Israel news agencies. This is the first case in which an Israeli citizen has been charged with joining the Islamic State.

The 23 year old, Hamza Magamzeh from Yafa an-Naseriyye in the Galilee region was arrested upon returning from Turkey to Israel, under suspicion he joined ISIS in Syria.

Details of his arrest were released to the public Sunday.

Magasmah was indicted Sunday on the charges of membership to an illegal organization, conspiracy to commit crime, illegal exit and travel as well as contacting a foreign agent.

According to reports Magasmah travelled with two friends to Turkey where they continued traveling to Syria where they joined an Islamic State registration camp. They were all reportedly drafted to ISIS, all three transferred to a training camp.

During their training, they reportedly met an Arab-Israeli named Maharan Khaldi, 19, from Nazareth

After 10 days in training, Magasmah reportedly decided to return to Israel via Turkey, arriving to Israel where he was arrested and interrogated by Israeli intelligence and police forces.
